Day 9 thru 12½ - 9.7.98 thru 9.10.98

Activities: Visiting Family in Charleston, South Carolina.

After driving down to Charleston Sunday evening after the lunch, I spent the next 3½ days visiting with family. It was my first visit to Charleston and my son had flown out to join me. I had heard by many that is was a beautiful city, but none of the descriptions did the place justice. Rather than bore you all with a bunch of pics of my family (though they are quite an interesting lot), I'll post pics of the sight seeing I did.

Charleston looks remarkably like it did 150 years ago. Much of that is due to the work of the Preservation Society of Charleston

As much of old Charleston as was left, or could be found, has been renovated as much as possible to it's pre-Civil War appearance - down to the carriage steps and carriage parking spaces

Taking a walk by the waterfront over looking Fort Sumter, the battlements have also been restored. It is easy to see how much this town takes pride in its history, flavor, and its part in the war - regardless of the outcome

All of the houses along the waterfront had a "widow's perch" (see bottom 2 pics). The wives of sailors used to spend a great deal of time on the small balconies waiting for their husbands ships to come in...many of the ships didn't

These houses were also very expensive in their time because of how much of the street front they took up. Like many of the European waterfront cities, house and business owners were taxed based on how much street-front their homes and businesses took. Many houses in the area were built with very little street facing, but were long and tall (see pics above for examples)

Even the old US Customs House (its major purpose was slave trade customs) has been renovated along with part of the slave market (which has been turned into a crafts market).

While in South Carolina, I stayed at my families home in a town that used to be a plantation (Hanahan). The whole neighborhood was gorgeous.

Dieter Z still felt more comfortable behind the police car...even when parked. He did have fun on the back streets of the area...as my Uncle is the user of the police car...his nephew could get away with most any reasonable traffic infringements

The other thing I had to do was take a visit to the smaller pond as neither Dieter nor I had driven there before.
